AWARDS DINNER COMING SOON

The Chamber is proud to announce our first awards dinner on March 16 at the Eminence Christian Church Fellowship Hall in the middle of Eminence. Our sponsors for the evening are Commonwealth Financial Advisors (Lance Minnis, one of our board members) and McDonalds in Pendleton and LaGrange. Our appetizer sponsor and dinner caterer is Barnett Baking Company of Bagdad. Nancy Barnett is a new chamber member and does wonderful appetizers, dinners, and her specialty, desserts. I know you will enjoy her presentation of dinner and her triple cake (three different cakes all in one). Please bring your spouse or significant other for this groundbreaking dinner with award presentations. This is a new area for our Chamber although other Chambers have done this for years. We are very pleased with the number of nominations, but we knew there are so many people who deserve to be recognized. Reservations must be made by March 11 (no exceptions). We will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, and may we all have the luck of the Irish! Reservation sheet is enclosed with this Briefing.

A NEW PROGRAM

The Chamber knows times are not the best, but we want all of our members to get the most for their membership investment. For the year 2010, we are offering the current members a $25 credit on your renewal if you can bring in a new member. All that has to be done is for the new member to place your name on the referred by area of the application. Your next bill (whenever it is due) will be credited with $25. You can refer any number (but, of course, they have to join), and for many of you, your dues will be paid for a year. We all win as we get new members and you get a break. There are many businesses here in the county who do not belong to the Chamber, so check with your business associates and bring them into the Henry County Chamber. Membership is not limited to Henry County. Enclosed is an application. Feel free to make as many copies as you might need.

CAR SHOW WILL BE HERE BEFORE WE KNOW IT

One of our best fund raisers is our annual Henry County Car Show which will be on August 28 this year. It is at Harry Hill Park on Hwy 421. This year we are changing our trophy presentations and will have 60 top cars with the award broken down into various decades so all will have a even chance of receiving an award. We are also offering our membership a 2 for 1 special. For your $30 investment in the awards, you will have your business name spread further. Of course you can sponsor as many as you wish and also do in memory or in honor of someone. We will again have our “Best of” categories and the Best of Show. You will receive more information closer to the time of the show. If you want to see our new award, come to the March 16 dinner where a sample will be on display.

HENRY COUNTY DIRECTORY

Time certainly flies when you are having fun, and it is difficult to believe it is time for the Henry County Directory to be published again. The Chamber is offering a 15% discount to all members who advertise. The Board hopes you can place an ad in the directory so the people who receive it (all Local subscribers, purchasers of the Local, all who request relocation information, state fair attendees and anyone who stops by the office requesting information) can see that Henry County is a thriving community that welcomes both potential residents and visitors. The book contains everything you always wanted to know about Henry County, but did not know where to find it. Most people keep it and refer to it when they need information. We hope your business will be a big part of this publication. The Henry County Local will be doing the book, and the Chamber directory will be included as well as articles about our communities and businesses. Information on the ads and pricing is enclosed.

DON’T THROW IT AWAY

In an attempt to hold down costs at the Chamber, many of you receive this information by e-mail and others by snail mail. The thing you need to remember is that there are several additional sheets with the dinner reservations, member application, and directory information included in this briefing. Please print them out if you receive this by e-mail; go ahead and send in those that interest you so they do not become lost in the shuffle. Sometimes we all get paper overload, and this may be the case here. If you do misplace something from the Chamber that you need, call the office and Pat will send out whatever it is you need.

MAP INFORMATION

There is still room for your business on our new map. We will be finishing up sales shortly, and Lanham Media Services will be getting your ad to proof as soon as we have determined we have enough sales to at least pay the cost. If you forgot to order your ad on this new publication (none done since 2002), just call Pat at 845-0806 and she will get your ad to the publisher. Lanham Media Services is a Chamber member of long standing and does a great job on everything he has done for us. Our postcards of the courthouse and tourism venues are examples of the work he does, and if you have not seen those, come by the office. They are also for sale at Cook’s Pharmacy/True Value and Pleasureville Florist and Antiques (our History books are for sale at both businesses as well). FYI the map will be done. There was some doubt for a short time, but we feel we can do it, and you can still be a part of it if you have not yet sent in your ad reservation.

AWARD NOMINATIONS DUE BEFORE FEB. 16

The Awards dinner mentioned earlier in the Briefing is March 16. The awards being given are Outstanding Citizen, Outstanding Chamber Member, Outstanding Farmer, Outstanding Business Person, Outstanding Educator, Outstanding Emergency Services Personnel, Outstanding Retired Educator and Business Beautification. You can e-mail or mail your nominations for this and just tell why this person deserves the award. Include the person nominated address and phone number, and your information as well, but if you do not want to be recognized as the person who made the nomination, just let us know. The Awards committee will meet Feb. 16, so be sure to get that nomination in before that date.

OFFICE DEPOT CAN SAVE YOU MONEY

The Chamber has a working relationship with Office Depot to save you money and give the Chamber some non-dues revenue. You can save money on your office supplies by signing up for this program. Here is the sheet that has to be sent to Becky Kane who will get you signed up. Then she will send you the information and price list on savings.

POSTCARDS FOR SALE

If you have not yet seen the new postcards of the courthouse and tourism attractions, go by Cooks or Pleasureville Florist (or here at the office). They are truly worthy of framing.  Where else for a mere 50c, you can bring back some great memories. Also don’t forget we still have a few Historic Images of Henry County ($53.00) and Sharing Henry County’s Heritage cookbook ($10.60). All of these make great gifts. We also have gift certificates that can be used in many of our businesses, and the person receiving them can choose where he/she wants to spend it. You don’t have to worry that the recipient may not like his/her gift. Call the Chamber office for more information on this. If your business would like to participate in the gift certificate program (which is an effort to keep money in the county), call the office at 845-0806.

THE CENSUS REALLY COUNTS

I do not believe most people realize how important the Census really is. “It will define who we are as a nation, affect political representation and direct the allocation of billions of dollars in government funding.” According to the brochure given to the Chamber the census information helps determine locations for schools, roads, hospitals, child-care and senior citizen centers. The form being used in 2010 is very different from the one used in 2000. Every resident will receive a short questionnaire (10 questions) which is simple and fast to complete and return. All information is confidential. The questionnaires will be mailed or delivered to home in Feb.-March 2010. April 1, 2010 is Census Day. If you do not complete the form, you will be visited by census takers to help with form completion. We need to be counted! Only through complete counts will Henry County be able to get its share of whatever the future brings.

NEW INITIATIVE

The Board approved our working toward a way to help you get to know other chamber members and also help keep information flowing. We plan to start an Ambassador’s Club under the guidance of board member Lance Minnis. Lance has working with a group of this type in Louisville, and we are adjusting the ideas to fit our smaller organization.

The only requirement to be a Chamber ambassador is that you be a employee or owner of a business in good standing with the Chamber or be an associate member and want to expand your knowledge of our business community. There are numerous ways to take part in this program. An attachment to the Briefing explains the program. This gives you an opportunity to meet other chamber members, discuss ideas and problems in common, and strengthen both your business and the chamber.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATES AVAILABLE

The Chamber receives legislative updates weekly (and sometimes daily) from the KY Chamber of Commerce. We are happy to send this on to you if you want them. Please let us know by e-mail if you want to receive these. We send out the BBB scam reports to you and if you do not wish to receive these, again, just let us know and we will remove your address from the list. We also receive updates from the KY Tourism Commission, and if your business can benefit from those, we will be happy to send them on to you. Not everyone wants all of this on their e-mail, so you must let me know to keep you on these e-mailings. If you do not have e-mail and need any of this information, call the office, and we will send it to you.

CHAMBER RECEIVED RATING

The Better Business Bureau has changed their business ratings to a report card type system. We are pleased to announce that the Henry County Chamber of Commerce received a rating of A+!

If your business can benefit from our (Check) Henry County First campaign to keep money in Henry County, call the office to be a member. It costs the business nothing, and when a certificate is used in your business, let the Chamber know and a check is written for the amount of the certificate. We all win because that money stayed in Henry County. We have 15 retail businesses listed now, and we certainly could use more.

Maintaining your membership in the Chamber not only helps you, but it helps the entire community. If there were no chamber, businesses would have no unified voice to promote the county and its resources. Our executive director goes outside the county to meetings and events to promote Henry County. It is another arm to make sure Henry County stays successful.
